THE DESIGN DRAWS ON THE EXCITEMENT OF TRADITIONAL THAILAND AND KOH PHANGAN ARCHITECTURE WITH A MODERN TWIST TO PLAY A BALANCING GAME BETWEEN PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE. THE AIRPORT WOULD BE THE FIRST AIRPORT IN THE WORLD WITH BUILT IN FLEXIBILITY TO GROW AND SHRINK AS CAPACITY IS NEEDED TO ACCOUNT FOR BUSY TIMES. THE BIGGEST AND MOST SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE AIRPORT, ITS CENTRAL BUILDING, REPRESENTS THE SINGLE ISLAND WHICH IS KOH PHANGAN AND THE TWO WINGS ACT AS SAND BARS – THE THING THE ISLAND IS KNOWN FOR, RISING OUT OF THE GROUND. ONE WING ACTS AS THE SECURE DAILY DEPARTURE GATE WHILE THE OTHER ACTS AS A PUBLIC TOURIST LOCATION FOR BOTH THE LOCALS, AND VISITORS. WHEN THE AIRPORT NEEDS TO EXPAND TO ALLOW FOR A BIGGER CAPACITY OF PEOPLE VISITING AND LEAVING THE ISLAND, THE SECOND WING WHICH IS PRIMARILY A PUBLIC TOURIST DESTINATION CAN BE EASILY CONVERTED TO A SECONDARY SECURE ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE GATE AREA. THIS LEVEL OF FLEXIBILITY WILL ALLOW FOR THE AIRPORT AND THE ISLAND TO BE ABLE TO HANDLE A REGULAR STREAM OF TOURISTS AND VISITORS AS WELL AS EASILY HANDLE THE PEAK VISITING DAYS OF THE HALF-MOON AS WELL AS THE FULL MOON PARTY.
